"You're wondering why you put a nobody like me on a pedestal. People are famous for their work. I'm famous for being infamous. Vulgar. Disgusting. Sexy. Dirty. So many words to describe me. I was used as a boarding pass so a film could take off. But I'm the vulgar one. You made me dance. But no one saw my work or my sincerity. You were too busy eyeing something else. But I'm the despicable one. I'm sexy. My films are not for family viewing, but they help make larger families....Your sense of honour amazes me. You make films about sex, sell them and watch them....Drape yourselves in your honour. I'll keep shedding my clothes"
Loosely based on the life…

Actresses 5x5: Bollywood & South India project: Vidya Balan #3
IMO this is really a film about female sexuality and how society treats it. In some ways female sexuality has tremendous power over people and it can be such a wonderful and joyful thing, but at the same time it's looked down upon and abused. The same people might actively pursue ways to have this raw female sexual power in their life, but will also judge it as morally wrong and call it disgusting.
It's also a story about one woman who realizes her sexuality is her most effective currency and decides to use it to her economic advantage, which is yet another aspect of the way we, as a society,… -
vidya balan really made the over the top-ness of milan luthria & rajat arora's style of cinema feel so natural and heartfelt (in the second half at least) at the same time.....
also the irony of having emraan hashmi, an actor whose career was built on having steamy scenes in movies and was sort of the trendsetter for this shit AND got so many jokes and labels (serial kisser,,, never forget) thrown at him for this reason, play the role of the director who hates the notion of having sex/steamy scenes sell his movies will never fail to surprise me lmaooooo -
The Dirty Picture is a semi-successful film that deals with eroticism in Indian cinema by formulating a loose biography of Silk Smitha and other actresses of the 70s and 80s who were typecast and utilised a little like Marilyn Monroe was in Hollywood during her day. In such, this focuses on the love-hate dichotomy audiences (male audiences) seem to have with sexual icons of the screen as well as the struggle that the humans behind the iconography endure.
I fear I give the film a little too much edge in saying this, however, as, whilst its commentary is embedded in irony and satire, it fails to humanise its main character. In such, it takes on a form that is not…

From playing a nerdy sister who kept on losing her hearing aid machine to a real life sex symbol is quite an accomplishment!Rewatching this i realized very few actresses would have done complete justice to such a role. It's a performance brimming with gusto all the way! Miss you Silk!

"The film is brilliant at two levels. It is acute in its portrayal of male hypocrisy, but more so in its portrayal of how sexuality liberates women. The Dirty Picture is the stuff of sociology and the meat of a feminist critique of a male world. Beyond its sociological roots, however, it is a celebration of life, an ode to cinema and the liberating power of sexuality. This is a woman who enjoys sex and whose sexuality exudes power and freedom. The woman's body becomes her way of being herself. When the body takes over and speaks its language, all society stops to watch and listen." Source: www.firstpost.com/bollywood/the-dirty-picture-free-sexual-and-female-148161.html

Vidya Balan's performance is stunning and I was pleasantly surprised about the film's feminist undertones.

Great movie to start a discussion on the career of item girl dancers in Hindi films.

Could've been so much more than what it is. I simply don't trust Bollywood with a story now.
Oversimplified narratives and telling a story just because of how shocking it is strips this film of the point of telling Silk's story -- going beyond the reel and tabloid columns. Sure, the true story needs to be told but the manner of telling comes of as merely a collection of dramatic scenes. The portrayal of the real emotional burden on Silk and the effect on her mental state gets lost in translation with the twists and turns of her story.
The result is just a sometimes laudable but mostly bland visualization of someone's Wikipedia page.

this film further solidified my misandrist POV. Also Vidya, there's NO one like you oh my God, I love you. [ also rest in power Silk Smitha ma'am :( ]
